How to do keyword research for your SEO campaign

There’s very little point in running an SEO campaign if you don’t know what keywords you should be optimising. Unfortunately, many businesses can be guilty of simply guessing what these keywords might be instead of doing proper research. This can lead to them being overly reliant on pieces of internal industry jargon instead of the words and phrases that actual customers use to search for their products and services. Thankfully, there are several ways to do proper SEO keyword research and in this article, we’ll explore a few of them.

Our first tip is to look at your Google Search Console report. This gives you a list of almost all the keywords for which your site has appeared in the Google search results over the last 90 days. Of course, if your site is appearing in the results then it’s likely that you’re already optimised for these terms. However, what also matters is the volume of searches for these particular terms – this is where the Google Keyword Planner tool becomes worth its weight in gold. Take some of the keywords you’ve found or are thinking of optimising for pop them into the tool to find out how many searches per month they attract. The results can often be surprising but it’s an essential tool that will stop you from wasting time and money on SEO campaigns that won’t drive results for your business.

Of course, if you’re not a digital marketing expert, all of this can seem a little bit daunting. This is why it’s often a good idea to outsource some of this work to a group of people who are. This doesn’t have to mean starting a flashy campaign with a digital agency. If you’re comfortable producing the new content that will be required but just need a little bit of guidance on the keywords and phrases that you should be using then there is no shortage of agencies who will be able to help you with that.

The best SEO campaigns are always driven by research. Taking time to do a little now will result in far better results in the future.
